Do tradies really need a website?

If your phone already rings and your calendar is full, it is a fair question. Why spend money on a website when word of mouth is doing the job?

Here is the honest answer: word of mouth and a website are not competing. A website makes your word of mouth work harder, and it catches the customers that word of mouth misses.

What happens when someone is referred to you

Think about what a person actually does when a mate says "call this bloke, he did our bathroom". They do not just ring a stranger. They look you up first. They want to see that you are real, that you do good work, and that you are still in business.

If they find a sharp, professional website with your work on it, that referral turns into a call. If they find nothing, or a dodgy old page, they hesitate. And a hesitating customer is one who might ring the next name instead.

So the website is not replacing the referral. It is closing it.

The customers word of mouth never reaches

Word of mouth only reaches people who know someone who knows you. Everyone else, the new family in town, the property manager who needs a reliable sparky, the business looking for a contractor, they are searching online. If you are not there, you do not exist to them. Your competitor who does have a website gets that call.

Over a year, that is a lot of work going to someone else simply because they were easier to find.

What a good trade website actually needs

A tradie website does not need to be fancy. It needs to:

  • Load instantly on a phone. That is where nearly everyone will find you, often standing on a job site or sitting in the ute.
  • Make it one tap to call. The whole point is usually to get the phone to ring. Do not bury the number.
  • Show your work and your credentials. A few good photos and your licences build trust fast.
  • Look professional. A clean, modern site says you take your business seriously, which makes people trust you with theirs.

The bottom line

You can absolutely run a trade business on word of mouth. But a good website means you win more of the referrals you already get, and you start catching the ones you never would have. For most tradies, it pays for itself in a handful of jobs.
