Website design for Mackay businesses
Mackay is two economies in one city: cane, coast and visitors on one side, Bowen Basin mining services on the other. We build websites that know which of those customers they are talking to, from a regional Queensland studio without city prices.
Get a free quoteMackay is a sugar city on the Queensland coast and the supply base for the northern Bowen Basin coalfields at the same time. Those two economies want completely different things from a website, and most local sites try to serve both and reach neither. Deciding which customer you are actually talking to is where the work starts.
Two economies sharing one city
Mackay is not one market. It is two genuinely different economies wearing the same postcode, and that is the thing most websites here quietly get wrong.
On one side there is the cane and the coast. The city sits at the mouth of the Pioneer River at the centre of one of the country's great sugar districts, with the mills at Farleigh, Marian and Racecourse firing up for the crush from around June and the Pioneer Valley running back into the hills behind town. At the top of that valley is Eungella, rainforest on the Clarke Range, where visitors stand at the Broken River platform waiting for a platypus to surface. Out the other way, Mackay is a jumping-off point for the Whitsundays. That side of the city sells place, feel and a good time.
On the other side is the heavy end. Head out along the Peak Downs Highway and you are at Nebo inside about an hour, and on to Moranbah and the middle of the northern Bowen Basin. Mackay is the supply base for a lot of that country. Paget, ten minutes from the CBD, is where the resource services sector actually lives: the fabricators and fitters, the hydraulics and line boring outfits, labour hire, heavy transport. South of the city, the terminals at Hay Point load Bowen Basin metallurgical coal onto ships bound for the steel mills of Asia. That side of the city sells capability, compliance and uptime.
Same city. Two completely different customers.
Most Mackay websites cannot decide who they are talking to
This is the practical problem, and you can see it on local site after local site. A procurement officer at a mine and a family planning a week up the coast want opposite things from a web page, and a lot of Mackay businesses try to serve both at once and land nowhere.
The site manager is scanning, not browsing. He wants your capability, your tickets and accreditations, your gear, how fast you can be on site, and a way to raise an enquiry that reaches a human. He is making that call fast, and he is deciding whether you are safe to put on a shortlist. Drone footage of the reef does nothing for him.
The family is doing the exact opposite. They are on a phone, half decided, going on feel. They want to see the place, believe it will be good, and book it before the moment passes. A capability statement and a fleet list will lose them instantly.
Neither visitor is wrong. What is wrong is a website that hedges. The fix is not clever design, it is a decision: work out which of Mackay's two economies actually pays your bills, build the site to win that person properly, and make the other audience a clear secondary path rather than a rival for the same space. That is the first conversation we have with a Mackay client, and everything else follows from it.
Two clocks running at once
Mackay also runs on two calendars, which the inland towns do not. The crush starts around June and the whole district gears up with it, cane moving, mills running, harvest contractors flat out for months. Mining works a roster that does not care what month it is. Visitor numbers swell through the cooler dry season when the south comes north. Plenty of local businesses sit across two of those rhythms at once.
That matters for a website more than it sounds. Demand arrives in waves rather than a straight line, so the site has to hold up when the wave lands, and you need to be able to change a price, an availability note or a service without waiting a week for someone to get back to you. We build so that is a phone call, not a support ticket.
Our Mackay proof is on Malcomson Street
We are not going to pretend to be a Mackay firm. We are in Emerald. But we do have real work in Mackay, and it happens to sit exactly on the line this page is about.
Central Tourist Park is at 15 Malcomson Street in North Mackay, a couple of kilometres out of the city centre, with cabins, villas and powered sites. Its guest list is the Mackay argument in one business: travellers and families doing the coast run, and workers who need a clean, affordable base close to town. One operation, both economies, same front gate. A site for a park like that has to load fast on a phone, show the accommodation honestly rather than flatteringly, and make it effortless to get a booking or an enquiry through, whether the person tapping is planning a holiday or a work stint.
The mining services side is not foreign to us either, just from the other end of the same supply chain. We are in Emerald, and we build for the businesses that feed the basin from the Central Highlands: Emerald Bearings and Hoses on the hydraulics and parts side, Emerald Freight Services moving gear through the coalfields. The customers, the procurement habits and the tolerance for marketing waffle are the same whether you approach the Bowen Basin from the west or from Mackay.
Emerald to Mackay, and why the distance is not the issue
We are honest about the distance. Emerald is a solid four hours inland, and we are not going to pretend otherwise or dress ourselves up as a Mackay local. It has never been a limitation on the work. What you get instead of a local shopfront is a studio that understands regional Queensland, charges regional rates rather than capital city ones, and puts you in direct contact with the person actually building the thing.
We will also be straight about what is achievable. Mackay has more businesses competing for the same searches than the inland towns do, and a fair few of them already have a decent site. We will tell you plainly what it takes to compete for the terms that matter to you rather than promising a result we cannot control. That straight talk, backed by genuinely good work, is how we would rather earn a Mackay business.
Start by deciding who you are talking to
If you run a business in Mackay, out through the Pioneer Valley, or south towards Sarina and Hay Point, the first question worth answering is not what your website should look like. It is which customer it is for: the one signing off a contract, or the one booking a weekend. Tell us which, and what the business actually does, and we will map out what the site needs to do and what it will cost. Fixed price, straight answers, usually back to you inside a day. And if you genuinely live off both economies, say so. That is the more interesting problem, and it deserves better than splitting the difference and hoping.

Common questions
Website design in Mackay, answered
Are you based in Mackay?
We are based in Emerald, in Central Queensland, and Mackay is part of the broader region we serve. We already build here. Central Tourist Park, the accommodation park on Malcomson Street in North Mackay, is our client. A modern web project runs perfectly well over phone, email and video regardless of the distance, and once a site is live we host it and look after it remotely. You get a regional Queensland studio that understands the market and is far easier to deal with, and far better value, than a capital city agency.
My business serves both the mines and the public. Which one should the website be built for?
That is the most useful question a Mackay business can ask us, and the honest answer is that you usually have to pick a lead. A site manager scanning your capability and a family booking a weekend want opposite things from the same page, so a site that hedges between them tends to convince neither. We work out which side actually pays your bills, build the site to win that person properly, and give the other audience a clear secondary path rather than a competing one.
Why choose a regional studio over a Mackay or Brisbane agency?
You get someone who understands the regional Queensland market and does not charge city overheads, and you deal directly with the person building your site rather than an account manager. For a lot of Mackay businesses that combination, real capability without the big-agency price and distance, is exactly what has been missing.
Can you handle bookings, online stores or business systems too?
Yes. We are not just a website studio. We build online stores, booking and payment systems, and the automation behind the scenes that handles enquiries and follow-up. Whether you are a tourism operator taking bookings or a services business drowning in admin, we can build the system to match.
What does a website cost for a Mackay business?
We put a fixed number on it before we start and we stick to it. A professional single-location site is very different to an online store or a booking platform, so we scope it to what you need. Tell us about the business and we will come back with a clear quote, usually within 24 hours.
